Livinggreen Project - Morden Hall Park, Surrey

Within the National Trust’s Morden Hall Park, Surrey a 19th century stable yard has been renovated to become the hub of the park in the form of a centre for sustainable living.  The Livinggreen initiative’s aim is to promote and implement sustainable renovation practices in 19th century buildings.  Choosing appropriate building materials to use in the renovation of the stable yard at Morden Hall Park was a key concern in a building that was originally built to simply provide horses with shelter from the elements.

The project team’s ambition was that all materials used in the renovation should be of low embodied energy, from sustainable resources, made from recycled materials, locally sourced or from National Trust estates and have a low environmental impact.  Cost was also an important factor in deciding what materials people would be likely to use in their own homes.

Livinggreen chose two products manufactured by Second Nature UK Ltd to insulate the stable yard, firstly, EdenBloc³⁵, our unique rigid board made from recycled carpet waste and Thermafleece PB20, a blend of recycled polyester and British sheep’s wool.  EdenBloc³⁵ was installed in the walls and roof in varying depths of 50mm to 360mm.  The roof used 150mm EdenBloc³⁵ under rafter and 100mm Thermafleece PB20 between rafter to achieve 0.14 W/m²K U-Value.
